The twist
The meds do not sedate you. They edit you.
The meds don't sedate you. They edit you. Every night at last call, someone is subtracted from the building, and everyone who swallowed their cup agrees that person was never there.
Ranger's bunkmate Mara vanished last Tuesday. Her book is still warm. If the trio takes tonight's dose, they will forget her too. The cart is coming.
Stupid Prison Problem
The cart is late. The taffy plan. A headcount that already includes you.
Character Conflict
Devon wants data. Twitch wants to not become a poster. Ranger wants Mara to have been real in the morning.
Surreal Interruption
A vending machine says a government name. A mural waves. The PA calls people who don't exist.
The engine
Devon. Twitch. Ranger.
Devon
Skipped first. For science.
Talks like a man building a machine out of other people's sentences. Not the straight man — the one who turned skipping into a protocol and then got surprised when grief showed up in the data.
Twitch
Sees the glitch. Also the vending machine.
Can't sit still. Unfinished sentences. Notices the mural blink before anyone else, then ruins it by also noticing a bag of chips. Sometimes prophet. Sometimes snack.
Ranger
The one with something to lose.
Former park ranger. Used to tell people not to feed the wildlife. Now he is the wildlife. Remembers Mara. If he swallows tonight, she dies a second time.
